What is direct traffic?
Direct traffic is the analytics bucket for sessions with no identifiable referrer or campaign parameter. It is commonly read as “people who typed your domain”, but in practice it is a residual bucket: the place every session ends up when its origin could not be determined.

In more detail
Its make-up has changed. Alongside genuine direct visits it now collects taps from apps, referrers stripped for privacy, some email and messaging clicks, and visits referred by AI assistants.
Treating direct as a channel therefore leads to poor decisions. It is better read as a measurement gap, and its growth as a sign that something unmeasured is growing inside it.
Key points
- A residual bucket, not a channel.
- Contains app taps, stripped referrers and AI assistant referrals.
- Growth in direct is usually growth in something unmeasured.
