Session replay explained: what it shows, and when to stop watching
Replay is one of the most commonly recommended tools in ecommerce and one of the most commonly abandoned. Both facts have the same cause, and understanding it tells you how to get value from it.

What it shows
A reconstruction of one session: which pages, in what order, where the pointer went, what was clicked, how far the page was scrolled and how long each moment took.
The fidelity is high, and for a single question (what happened to this shopper) nothing else comes close.
What it structurally cannot show
Frequency. One recording is one anecdote, and the temptation to generalise from a vivid one is strong and usually wrong.
Cost. A recording of a shopper struggling tells you nothing about what that struggle is worth each month, which is the number that decides whether it is worth fixing.
Cause. You see hesitation; you infer why. That inference is where most replay-driven conclusions go astray.
And on Shopify’s hosted checkout, the checkout itself: third-party scripts cannot record those pages.
Why teams stop watching
Not because the tool is bad. Because the work has no completion criterion: there is always another recording, no point at which you are finished, and no way to know whether the twenty you watched were representative.
Work with that shape reliably loses to work with a deadline. The install survives; the habit does not.
How to get value from it
Use it second, not first. Find the loss in the funnel, form a hypothesis, then watch five sessions from exactly that cohort to confirm or kill it. That is a bounded task with a clear answer.
Never open replay with the intention of browsing. That is the version that gets abandoned.
Where Liftable stands on replay
Liftable has no session replay and no heatmaps. Its pixel records the steps a shopper took (pages viewed, clicks, scroll depth and the names of form fields), never what was typed and never a video of the session.
That is a deliberate trade. Steps are enough to count how many sessions hit a dead control or abandoned a field, which is the frequency a recording cannot give you, and they carry far less personal data. If you want to watch individual sessions, keep a tool built for it; Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar both do it well.
Questions
Is session replay a privacy risk?
It can be, and the mitigations matter: input values should never be recorded, sensitive fields should be masked in the browser rather than after the data has left it, and consent should be checked before anything is sent. Ask any vendor where redaction happens; before or after the data reaches them is a materially different answer.
How many sessions should I watch?
Five from a specific, defined cohort will usually settle a specific hypothesis. Watching fifty at random will produce a strong feeling and no reliable conclusion.
Does Liftable have session replay?
No. Liftable’s pixel records the steps a shopper took, such as pages viewed, clicks and scroll depth, not a video, and never what was typed into a form. It asks Shopify’s Customer Privacy API first and sends nothing until the shopper has consented to analytics.
