Glossary · Traffic · also non-human traffic
What is bot traffic?
Bot traffic is automated, non-human requests to a store: crawlers, scrapers, uptime monitors, link-preview fetchers and fraud tooling. It inflates session counts without ever converting, which understates conversion rate by roughly its own share and distorts every rate calculated from sessions.

In more detail
The commercial damage is subtle. A store with a large share of automated sessions sees a conversion rate well below its shoppers’ real rate, concludes the store is broken, and goes looking for a problem that does not exist.
Detection is behavioural rather than a list: no pointer movement, impossible dwell times, perfectly even scrolling, data-centre origins, and request patterns no person produces. It works best before storage, so that every downstream figure is human by construction rather than corrected afterwards.
Key points
- Inflates sessions, never converts, understates conversion rate.
- Detected by behaviour, not from a user-agent list alone.
- Filter before storage so downstream numbers are human by default.
