What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is visits to a store that come from an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot after it recommended or cited a product or page. Assistants often send no referrer and add no campaign parameters, so many analytics setups file these visits under direct, which hides the channel in the reports you would use to notice it.

In more detail
The behaviour is distinctive. Assistant-referred shoppers usually land deep, straight on a product rather than the homepage, because the assistant has already done the browsing. They often arrive with more of the decision already made.
That makes friction on their path expensive: friction that hits a cohort close to buying costs more per session than the same friction elsewhere.
Detecting it honestly means combining known assistant referrer domains with campaign tags and behaviour, and reporting how confident the attribution is rather than asserting a precise number you cannot support.
Key points
- Often misattributed to direct: no referrer, no campaign tag.
- Lands deep, on product pages rather than the homepage.
- Often further along in the decision, so friction on that path costs more per session.
- Honest detection states its confidence instead of a false precision.

Questions
Can I see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?
ChatGPT traffic shows up in GA4 only partially and unreliably. Some assistant referrals carry a referrer you can filter for; many carry none and land in direct alongside genuine direct visits. A defensible estimate needs behavioural detection on top of referrer matching.
