Diagnosing checkout drop-off when you can’t see the checkout
Checkout is the most valuable step to fix and the least visible. That is a platform constraint rather than a tooling gap, and the method that works accepts it rather than pretending otherwise.

Be clear about what can and cannot be seen
Shopify’s checkout runs in a sandbox that third-party page scripts cannot reach. No tool can record it, and a vendor describing checkout recordings on Shopify is describing the pages before checkout, or something other than Shopify’s own checkout.
What is available is events. Shopify’s web pixels receive standard checkout events: checkout started, contact, address and shipping details submitted, payment details submitted, checkout completed. In order, those are enough to localise the loss without a recording.
Localise the loss with events first
Reached but never submitted payment, and submitted payment but never completed, are different failures. The first is usually cost, a delivery expectation or a required field. The second is usually payment: a declined card, an unavailable method, or an error with no useful message.
Split them before doing anything else. It halves the search at no cost.
Then read the cart page, which you can see
Most causes of the first failure are visible before checkout. Watch what the total does between the product page and the cart. If it moves by more than the shopper could have predicted, you have found the mechanism.
Discount fields deserve particular attention. A code that fails silently, or applies to nothing, produces an immediate exit and is invisible in aggregate metrics.
Check the delivery promise for consistency
A delivery estimate on the product page that disagrees with the one at checkout is a trust failure at the worst possible moment. It is common when an app supplies one and Shopify calculates the other.
Check this by hand across a few products rather than instrumenting it. It is a short job with a yes-or-no answer.
Segment by device, always
Checkout completion differs between phones and desktops, and an aggregate figure is dominated by whichever has more volume. A wallet payment missing on mobile can be invisible in the average.
What Liftable sees at checkout
Liftable’s checkout pixel is a Shopify web pixel, the route Shopify provides for this, so it receives the checkout events above rather than the checkout page itself. Combined with the steps shoppers took on the cart and product pages, that is the method in this guide. Like the storefront pixel, it sends nothing until the shopper has consented.
The free scan works without any install. It checks what a crawl can see on the way to checkout: whether shipping cost first appears there, whether the free-shipping threshold is communicated, whether the discount field invites shoppers to leave, and whether express checkout is visible on the mobile cart. A check that checkout branding matches the store is planned. The scan prints no dollar figure.
Questions
Can any tool record Shopify checkout?
No third-party script can record Shopify’s hosted checkout pages. Tools that claim checkout visibility are working from checkout events or from the pages before it. A vendor implying otherwise is worth a follow-up question.
Is checkout drop-off always bad?
No. Some drop-off at the final step is normal: shoppers reconsider, get interrupted or compare prices. The signal to act on is a change in the rate, or a rate that differs sharply between devices or payment methods.
