What is conversion rate?
Conversion rate is the share of sessions, or of visitors, that complete a defined goal, usually a purchase. It means little without three facts beside it: which denominator was used, whether bot traffic was removed, and which segment was measured. The same store can honestly report very different conversion rates depending on those choices.

In more detail
The most common mistake is treating conversion rate as a single number for a store. It is an average across segments that behave nothing like each other: mobile and desktop, paid and organic, returning and new, one country and another. An average that hides a mobile problem will send you optimising the wrong page for a month.
The second mistake is the denominator. Sessions and visitors give different numbers, and neither is wrong, but comparing your session-based rate with someone else’s visitor-based benchmark compares two different things.
The third is bots. If a meaningful share of your sessions are automated, your conversion rate is understated by roughly that share, and every improvement you make looks smaller than it is.
Key points
- Always state the denominator: sessions or visitors.
- Always state whether bot traffic was filtered.
- Segment by device before drawing any conclusion.
- Cross-store benchmarks mean little without a matching vertical, price point and traffic mix.

Questions
What is a good ecommerce conversion rate?
There is no single defensible answer, because conversion rate varies widely by vertical, price point and traffic source. A benchmark quoted without asking what you sell and where your traffic comes from is a guess. Your own trend, segmented by device, is the comparison that means something.
