What is revenue per session?
Revenue per session is total revenue divided by sessions over the same period. It combines conversion rate and average order value into one figure, which makes it the better headline metric when a change could plausibly move either, for example a bundle, a shipping threshold or a price test.

In more detail
Conversion rate alone can mislead in both directions. A discount that lifts conversion while cutting order value looks like a win. A price rise that cuts conversion while raising revenue looks like a loss. Revenue per session captures both effects together.
It is noisier than conversion rate, because order values have a long tail and one unusually large order moves it. When it is used to judge a test, it needs either a longer window or a method that limits the pull of outlier orders.
Key points
- Combines conversion rate and average order value.
- The right metric for anything touching price, bundling or shipping thresholds.
- Noisier than conversion rate: outlier orders move it.
