What is friction?
Friction is anything in a shopping experience that makes the next step harder than the shopper expected: a control that does not respond, information that arrives too late, a form that asks too much, a page that takes too long. Friction shows up in behaviour as hesitation, repetition, reversal and abandonment, which is what makes it measurable.

In more detail
The useful property of friction is that it leaves evidence. A shopper who expected a size guide to open clicks it again. A shopper surprised by the shipping cost goes back to the product page. A shopper on a slow page scrolls before it has finished drawing. These are observable patterns, not guesses about intent.
That is what separates friction detection from opinion. “This page feels cluttered” is a design view. “A measurable share of sessions on this page click an element that has no handler” is a fact that can be counted and given a cost.
Key points
- Detected through behaviour: hesitation, repetition, reversal, abandonment.
- Distinct from aesthetic judgement: it leaves evidence that can be counted.
- Most friction is dull and specific rather than strategic.
