What is Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)?

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long the largest visible element on a page, usually a hero image or product photo, takes to render. It is one of Google’s Core Web Vitals and approximates the moment a shopper sees the page as loaded; Google rates 2.5 seconds or less, at the 75th percentile of page loads, as good.

In more detail

On product pages LCP is almost always the main product image, which makes it fixable by ordinary means: correctly sized sources for the screen, modern image formats, and not lazy-loading the one image that sits above the fold.

It is worth measuring on real sessions rather than in a lab. Field data includes the mid-range phone on a poor connection; a synthetic test on a fast machine reports a number few shoppers experience.

Key points

  • Google’s threshold for good is 2.5 seconds or less, at the 75th percentile of page loads.
  • Usually the product image on a PDP.
  • Lazy-loading the image above the fold is a common own goal.
  • Field measurement beats lab measurement for commercial decisions.
