What is JavaScript bloat?
JavaScript bloat is the accumulated weight and execution cost of the scripts a storefront loads, usually from installed apps. It delays the moment a page responds to input, and the effect falls hardest on mid-range phones on mobile connections, which on many stores carry the largest group of shoppers.

In more detail
Bloat builds up unseen. Each app adds a script that seemed reasonable on its own, and nothing in the platform reports the total. Uninstalling an app can leave its script behind in the theme.
The honest way to audit it is per origin: how many kilobytes each third party sends, and how much main-thread time each one takes. A single page-weight number tells you there is a problem but not which app to remove.
Key points
- Measure per origin: weight and main-thread time for each third party.
- Removed apps can leave scripts behind in the theme.
- The impact concentrates on mid-range phones, not on the reviewer’s laptop.
